Hormone Replacement Therapy & Contraceptive Considerations
The DUTCH Complete measures endogenous hormones your body produces naturally, as well as bioidentical hormones being supplemented. It is not able to measure synthetic hormones found in hormonal contraceptives or their metabolites. Please keep the following in mind:
Hormone Replacement Therapy
Appropriate for:
Oral micronized progesterone
Estradiol (E2) – patches, gels, creams, vaginal creams & pellets
Testosterone – best used as a complementary test to serum testosterone when on transdermal, injection, or pellet testosterone HRT
Contraceptives
Appropriate for:
Non-hormonal contraceptives – copper IUD
Limited insight into sex hormones & metabolites:
Combination hormonal contraceptives (oral, patches, rings, or Depo-Provera shot)
- Progesterone may mimic postmenopausal ranges, and estrogen may show as baseline
- Testosterone may appear artificially suppressed
Progestin-only contraceptives (IUDs, pills, implants)
- Progesterone may appear low or show a typical monthly spike
- Estrogen may appear normal, fluctuating, or low
